Foden edges Palmer to win Transfermarkt's Premier League player of the season

Who has been the most outstanding player of the 2023/24 season in the Premier League? As is now the tradition, Transfermarkt will present the division's MVP award to the player who obtains the most votes from our users, and the results are now in. Last year, the Premier League winner was Manchester City's Erling Haaland, who was prolific in his debut season in England, as he broke the division's goal record, scoring 36 times on the way to the Sky Blues winning the title. His team-mate Kevin De Bruyne won the award in 2022, with Harry Kane, then of Tottenham, victorious in 2021. De Bruyne is the only player to have won the Transfermarkt Premier League player of the season award more than once.

Now we can reveal that this season's winner is none other than Manchester City star Phil Foden. After playing an integral part in the Sky Blues winning a historic fourth Premier League title in-a-row, the Englishmen took 23.23% of the votes just edging Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who finished second with 20.53% of the votes. In third place was Man City's Haaland with 15.89% of the votes. In the forward category that Foden was part of, the 24 year old received 40.80% of the votes, and there can't be much doubt that the winger is a deserved winner of the overall award this term.

It's been a real breakthrough season for Foden, as he hit his best ever goals tally of 19 in the Premier League, and played a crucial role in Man City lifting a fourth consecutive title. In this week's Premier League market value update the 24 year old received a huge +€20m upgrade, to take his market value to €150m and put him among the world's elite. Now only club teammate Haaland (€180m), international teammate Jude Bellingham (€180m), and Kylian Mbappé (€180m) are worth more than Foden. He is the joint most valuable winger in the world, alongside Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior (€150m). 

In the Premier League alone, Foden finished the season with 27 direct goal contributions (19 goals and 8 assists). Only four players in the division bettered that - two of which were strikers. It was by far the best output Foden has registered in his career to date. Before this campaign, Foden had never even scored more than nine league goals in a season. The injuries to De Bruyne afforded Foden a more central role in the Man City set up early on in the season and he has flourished. So much so that even when De Bruyne returned, Foden was still predominantly used more centrally than in previous seasons.

After his man-of-the-match performance in the Manchester derby in early March, manager Pep Guardiola claimed that Foden was 'the best player in the Premier League' and his efforts have now been duly rewarded by the Transfermarkt community as he became the third Man City player in a row to win the coveted Premier League player of the season award. Foden will be hoping his form can continue this summer with England at Euro 2024. Across the other top five leagues the winners were: Jude Bellingham in La Liga, Hakan Çalhanoglu in Serie A, Florian Wirtz in the Bundesliga and Kylian Mbappé in Ligue 1.
